Magnesium Sulphate Monohydrate ($MgSO_4 \cdot H_2O$) is a hydrated form of magnesium sulfate. It is commonly found in nature as the mineral Kieserite. While the heptahydrate version (Epsom Salt) is more famous for household use, the monohydrate is preferred in industrial and agricultural settings due to its higher concentration of magnesium by weight.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Magnesium Sulphate Monohydrate typically appears as a white, free-flowing granular or crystalline powder.

  • Magnesium Content: It contains approximately 16% to 17% Magnesium ($Mg$) and 20% to 22% Sulfur ($S$).

  • Solubility: It is soluble in water, though it dissolves more slowly than the heptahydrate form. It is virtually insoluble in alcohol.

  • Stability: It is more stable under high temperatures than Epsom salt, which tends to lose its water molecules and "melt" in its own hydration water at around 70°C.

  •  pH Level: A 5% aqueous solution typically maintains a nearly neutral to slightly acidic pH (between 5.0 and 8.0).

Key Industrial & Agricultural Applications

This compound is a powerhouse for providing essential nutrients without significantly altering soil pH or adding harmful chlorides.
