Potassium Sulphate (K₂SO₄)

Description:
Potassium Sulphate (K₂SO₄) is a water-soluble salt that acts as an efficient shale stabilizer, particularly when drilling hydro-sensitive clays and shales. It works through an ion exchange process, where the potassium ion enters between individual clay platelets in the shale, binding them together and preventing water from entering the shale from the drilling fluid.

Application:

Potassium Sulphate can be added directly to a drilling fluid system to enhance its inhibitive qualities. It can also function as a weighting agent, with densities ranging from 1.005 SG (8.4 lb/gal) to 1.075 SG (8.95 lb/gal). A Potassium Sulphate solution becomes saturated near 1.075 SG (8.95 lb/gal), and the maximum concentration that can be used is 9%. The salt becomes less soluble as it approaches the saturation point.

Typical Physical Properties:
  • Appearance: White crystals or powder
  • Solubility:
    • 11 g / 100 g of water at 0°C
    • 12 g / 100 g of water at 20°C
    • 24 g / 100 g of water at 40°C
  • Purity: 98% minimum
Advantages:
  • Inexpensive and readily available
  • Compatible with most drilling fluid additives
  • Stabilizes water-sensitive clays and shales
  • Prevents issues arising from shale instability
  • Fast-dissolving
  • Chloride-free
Packaging:

Available in 25 kg and 50 kg bags. Customized packaging is available upon request.

Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate is a colorless/white crystalline compound, one of the three possible hydrates of zinc sulfate. The other two hydrates include Zinc Sulphate Hexahydrate and Zinc Sulphate Heptahydrate. It is odorless, highly soluble in both water and alcohol, and insoluble in acetone.

The compound is produced by reacting sulfuric acid with zinc oxide, followed by purification processes where lead, iron, manganese, and cadmium are removed. The solution is then concentrated and dried to yield the final product.

Key Uses of Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate:
  1. Dietary Supplement

    • Corrects Zinc Deficiency: Vital for healthy tissue growth, immune system support, wound healing, and cellular function.
    • Human and Animal Health: Helps with growth, pregnancy, and appetite regulation. Zinc deficiency can cause a wide range of symptoms like growth retardation and weakened immune responses.
  2. Acne Treatment

    • Due to its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, Zinc Sulphate is commonly found in toiletries and bathing products.
  3. Fertilizer

    • Prevent Zinc Deficiency in Plants: It is frequently used to enrich soil and crops, preventing the discolouration of leaves in zinc-deficient plants.
    • Water-Soluble Fertilizer: Easily mixed with other fertilizers, it ensures plants receive the zinc they need to grow healthily.
  4. Animal Feed

    • Used as a supplement to ensure livestock receives adequate zinc, promoting healthy growth and preventing deficiencies.
  5. Moss Control

    • Eradicates Unwanted Moss: Zinc Sulphate binds with plant proteins and organic acids, stunting growth and eliminating moss on surfaces like lawns and roofs.
  6. Brewing Industry

    • Yeast Growth Booster: Brewers, especially of wheat beer, use Zinc Sulphate as a nutrient to boost yeast growth and enhance fermentation speed through enzyme reactions.

Zinc sulfate is colorless or white rhombic crystal or powder at room temperature. It is astringent and soluble in water. The aqueous solution is acidic and slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol. Pure zinc sulfate will not turn yellow in the air for a long time, and will become a white powder in dry air. There are many kinds of hydrates: zinc sulfate heptahydrate is a stable hydrate in the range of 0-39ºC, zinc sulfate hexahydrate at 39-60ºC and zinc sulfate monohydrate at 60-100ºC. When heated to 280°C, various hydrates completely lose their crystal water, decompose into zinc sulfate at 680°C, decompose further above 750°C, and finally decompose into zinc oxide and sulfur trioxide at about 930°C. ZnSO4·7H2O and MSO4·7H2O (M=Mg, Fe, Mn, Co, Ni) form mixed crystals in a certain range.

Application

Used in the manufacture of artificial fiber, pesticide, dyestuff, electroplating and other zinc salts. It is the raw material for the manufacture of zinc salts and lithopone. Electrolytic industry is used for cable galvanizing and electrolytic pure zinc. It is also used to prevent diseases in fruit tree nursery, wood and leather preservatives and man-made fiber industry. Food grade is used as a nutritional supplement (zinc fortifier).
